Jesse Labelle has seen some of his favourite bands perform at The Kool Haus, one of Toronto’s most well known music venues, and he finally got his chance to step into the spotlight on that very stage.
Fresh from his performance at this year’s Canadian Radio Music Awards, Jesse not only got to play his hit track “Heartbreak Coverup,” but he also walked away with the award for Best New Group/Solo Artist (Hot A/C).
“I was a little speechless and I didn’t really know what to say, but it was great to have my peers in the industry to recognize that song,” he says. “I’m really proud of it.” He worked with fellow Canadian artist Alyssa Reid who is featured on the track and the pair was rewarded when the single went gold.
A lot has been happening for Jesse. “I’ve always thought that if you work hard enough at anything, you should succeed in it,” he says, “and this last year I’ve finally started to feel that I have some success in what I’m doing. It feels really good.”
Being in the industry for some time now, Jesse says that his sound has evolved and he’s continually growing. He’s been writing music since he was 17 and his first songs reflected that time in his life. With his sophomore album Two, just released this past August, he says it’s a step in the right direction. “I don’t even think it’s where I need to be yet, but it’s getting there,” he says. “It’s like climbing a ladder and I feel like I’m comfortable climbing the ladder now.”
He’s hoping to focus more on spreading his music internationally, especially in Europe. He’s looking forward to connecting with more fans and being able to share his experiences with them. “They make you feel like the stuff you created out of nothing is validated and it means something to them,” he says. “And that’s an awesome feeling.”
And he’s showing no signs of slowing down. “I’m most excited now because I feel like it’s time to shift focus off of this one and start working towards the next one,” he says.
