Seattle-based production duo ODESZA brought their unique electronic sound to Toronto’s Tattoo Rock Parlour for Canadian Music Week for the first time. Harrison Mills (aka Catacombkid) and Clayton Knight (BeachesBeaches) have been making music together since 2012 after meeting during college.
ODESZA’s latest EP My Friends Never Die was released last year and the guys have been on tour extensively, making their presence known in the electronic music scene. They’ve seen a change in the industry and they like the direction it’s moving in.
“It’s a lot vaster than it used to be and I like that there’s a lot more variety,” says Harrison. “My f avourite thing is the diversity in sounds, and I’m finding more and more often there’s a shift to stranger sounds, which is cool.”
Their own sound is a combination of electronic, pop, ambient and hip-hop influences; they like to throw in as much as they can.
“It’s definitely a big mixing pot of different sounds,” says Harrison. They work closely together to produce music that incorporates their love of experimentation. “We’re always changing, but we try to keep that emotional aspect to everything we do,” he says. “There’s a soul to it.”
They also spend a lot of time on SoundCloud, discovering new music and being inspired by everything they find online. And social media has been a key to their quick success.
“It’s such a powerful tool and if you can connect to your audience, people respond to that and will want to see you,” says Harrison. “Whether it’s your music or your personality, if you can do both it’s a winning combination.”
They’ve been working on a full-length album for the past year and a half, which will be released later this year.
