On October 18, 2011, Juma showed under the LG Fashion week tents in Toronto’s David Pecaut Sqaure. The brother and sister team is best known for their unique digital prints on jerseys, jumpsuits and scarves.
Inspired by art and world travel, the duo presented a collection full of eclectic patterns. If you like what you see, the members-only site Peacock Parade (no longer active in 2021) has exclusive rights to sell six of Juma’s S/S designs until October 25.
Here’s the rundown from the runway:
Hits: As usual, JUMA’s signature prints made the pieces. Shades bled beautifully through peacock and reptilian patterns, creating a whimsical tie-dye-esque effect. The show began in grayscale and reached its peak with bright red, orange, and purple shades. The perfect splash of color was oh-so-refreshing after collections and collections of color blocking from other designers.
The models rocked a glitter-geek look with slicked back hair and reading glasses. This awkwardly awesome aesthetic was fun and unique; just like the clothes.
Misses: Not many. Some of the more ‘progressive’ menswear isn’t wearable for the average guy, and is better considered as inspiration than ready-to-wear. Also, it would’ve been nice to see more of Juma’s trademark scarves come down the catwalk.
Cool Fact: Several of Juma’s prints contained photographs of Turkish gardens and ceramics taken by their mom! The results showed listening to mom can be a very, very good thing.
