Movie Review: The Perks Of Being A Wallflower

We are infinite.

Based on the novel of the same name by Stephen Chbosky (who also serves as the director of the film), The Perks of Being A Wallflower follows Charlie (Logan Lerman), a teen with a troubled past and no friends, as he enters his first year of high school during the 1990s, in Pittsburgh. He’s nervous about starting school again, mostly because his only friend Michael committed suicide several months before the movie starts, so he feels completely alone.

Though he begins the year as the wallflower–shy and unpopular and largely ignored by everyone–he soon meets two seniors who will change his life: Sam (Emma Watson) and her step-brother Patrick (Ezra Miller). They bring Charlie into their fold and suddenly, life seems like it could be good again.

But every group of friends has their drama: Patrick is in a secret relationship, Sam is dating older guys who treat her badly, Mary Elizabeth (Mae Whitman) stakes her claim on an unsuspecting Charlie, and Charlie is impossibly in love with a girl he can’t have.

Will the bond that these friends form, regardless of the ups and downs, be able to hold out and create a better life for Charlie or will his past come back to haunt him again?

Perks of Being A Wallflower

Here’s the run down:

Drama: Definite drama fest. But that’s high school, right? Even when it’s your group of friends vs. the world, there is still bound to be conflicts within the inner circle. There is a depth to the drama in this film that will leave you with more than a few tears.

Humour: If you’re anything like me, you will LOVE the character of Patrick–he is eccentric and over-the-top. He also looks amazing in a Rocky Horror Picture Show costume!

Romance: Though she’s a few years older than Charlie, you will find yourself rooting for his super-sweet crush to be noticed by the girls of his dreams, Sam.
