“Never enter the woods, this is where they wait.”

We all know M. Night Shyamalan from his brilliant and scary “The Sixth Sense” but he is also well known for his “plot twists” that will keep you on the edge of your seat till the last frame of the movie. I wasn’t as scared as I thought I would be but I was really surprised at how good the story was and the tense and frightening atmosphere he has created in this isolated village is well worth experiencing. I found myself plugging my ears constantly because of the creepy and super suspenseful sound effects that M. Night Shyamalan has a gift for.

When you first see this idyllic, picturesque village, you see a close knit happy community yet, even then you are aware that something is wrong, something is lurking in the woods. Even at a joyous occasion such as a wedding the worried and fearful looks that the villagers cannot seem to hide lend to the suspense. Surrounding the village are the dark and ominous woods where terrifying creatures dwell, and just knowing of their existence is enough to keep anyone from ever crossing the boundry. The fear that exists in the village is so real that you can taste it and it affects everything the inhabitants do in their day to day lives. The watchtower that looms over the town adds to the scary feeling that you have to always be on your guard, always watching, and you can never relax, not even for a minute, or they could get you.

I really liked Bryce Dallas Howard (daughter of famous film director- Ron Howard), this is her feature film debut and she plays a strong, independent and amazingly brave woman who is wonderful to watch. Joaquin Phoenix plays the quiet but brave Lucius, who is the first to ever suggest leaving the village to go to “the towns” to get medical supplies for the villagers. You can only sit back, try to relax and see what happens next.
