Flying in from the punk rock landscape, Angels and Airwaves are finding their wings with a new project that’s a far cry from anything its members have previously undertaken. Featuring Tom DeLonge (of Blink-182), Ryan Sinn (The Distillers), Atom Willard (Offspring), and David Kennedy (Box Car Racer), A&A may appear to be a super side project for each band mate, but that’s certainly not the case. “If it’s thought about as a side project, that’s definitely a misconception,” affirms guitarist David Kennedy. “This is our own thing, it’s all we’ve got, and this is all we want.”
Their debut album, We Don’t Need To Whisper, features epically spacious rock tracks that clock in at between four to six minutes each. While it may seem to have taken a while to develop such a broad, barely mainstream-sounding album, it actually came together quite organically. “We just started talking—where we needed to be, ultimately in life—and by talking about that, music started being talked about,” reflects Kennedy. “We talked real big at the beginning amongst ourselves about what we wanted to do. If we knew that something felt comfortable or normal, [we thought] maybe that was the wrong direction for it.”
