Sweatpants,
cords or capris. None of them compare to the pair of magical pair
jeans found by four best friends. Being fourth novel in the series
of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants this book has a well balanced
mixture of comedy and drama to make for one of the best teen-fiction
books by Ann Brashares, Forever In Blue.
Once again the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, made up of Lena,
Carmen, Bridget and Tibby, are sending the magical pants that fit
them all perfectly, to each other in order to keep in touch during
the summer. But this summer is different because they have just
ended they’re first year at college.
Lena is off at art school and is starting to get over her ex-boyfriend
Kostos as she gets involved with someone else but worries that as
soon as she forgets about Kostos, will be when he shows up to see
her again. Lena is beautiful but quiet and is the least outgoing
of the group. Usually she doesn’t want to stand out or be
noticed like when she waits 20 minutes outside of the classroom
to get a look at a boy in her art class but doesn’t go and
talk to him. Carmen feels invisible at college, completely opposite
from her usual self so in some hope to become popular she makes
friends with an overachieving actress who may not be as friendly
as and as supportive Carmen had thought. Carmen likes to stand out
and be noticed by her friends and family which is why when she becomes
invisible she’ll do almost anything to be seen.
Bridget goes to Turkey to join an archaeological dig where her attention
soon turns from her boyfriend who is in Mexico to her archaeological
professor who has a wife and kids. Bridget is the most outgoing
and sometimes doesn’t have the best judgment when it comes
to romance, like when she falls for someone she knows that she can’t
have. Tibby avoids her boyfriend Brian, not realizing that he won’t
wait for her forever, and she will have to act quickly if she wants
to fix her mistake. Tibby is more direct with what she says and
how she acts but usually keeps her comments to herself like when
she doesn’t tell her best friends how she’s feeling
even though she really wants to.
This book was a great read overall, and compared to the other three
books in the series it is one of the best because of the quality
of the writing and variety of good ideas. The suspense was okay
in parts and not so good in others, but the lack of suspense is
made up for with the amount of drama. The theme of course is excellent
as it usually is with the books in this series, telling the story
of the four girls keeping in touch during the summer with a magical
pair of pants that fits them all.
The most interesting parts of
the novel was Lena’s and Tibby’s part in the story because
of the difference they made in the plot and because there was much
more character development fort them in this book then there was
in all the other books in the series. This was one of the best books
from The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and is probably the last
one, because of how the ending goes, but to find out what happens
you’ll have to read the book yourself.
