Ms. Corwin, an eight-grade science teacher at Thurston Middle School,
had in her class a student by the name of Keke Lawther. Keke is not
one of those boys that get referrals or detentions. He just likes
to give the teacher a good laugh. But sometimes he drives teachers
crazy. So for today’s joke Keke and his table partner, Michael
got under the table. He drew a funny picture of some random stick
figure and taped it to the their chair. While Ms. Corwin was displaying
the notes for the day she glanced over the funny drawings. She laughed
and walked over to the table where Michael and Keke were hiding. She
glanced under the table and saw the two giggling. The whole class
burst up in laughter, even Ms. Corwin. This was a daily routine of
Ms. Corwin’s spectacular 4th period science class. Keke and
Ms. Corwin had a very special relationship. They would joke and laugh
with each other. Keke was 13 year-old Hawaiian, very popular and had
very long surfer dude hair. He loved soccer and almost every other
sport in which he would play with the neighborhood 13 year old kids.
After school they would get together and play football or what ever
the in season sport. To Keke’s misfortune Keke lived out in
the boonies, 3 miles from civilization.

I hadn’t had a girl friend for quite a while and I was beginning
to like this girl named Jenae. She seemed like a nice girl and she
was pretty hot. Jenae was a blond haired girl that was about 5’5”.
She always wore the nicest looking clothes. She had the smallest fingers
which she had a ring on every other finger. Also she wore sandals
almost every day. I really didn’t know her very well. But, I
am a cool guy so she would probably want to go out with me. On the
down side she wasn’t very athletic and she hung out with some
odd people. But I could fix that. Jenae was in my art class, 5th period.
So it wasn’t like she had never seen me before. The next day
in 5th period we switched seats. I told Mr. Prindle, the art teacher,
that I wanted to sit next to Jenae. He didn’t have a problem
with it. I was really excited to sit next to her. I said hi to her
as we begun to get ready for class. She glanced over and gave me a
dirty look. Not a good way to start a relationship. The days went
by and I would pull the same stuff that I had before. I would try
to make her laugh, and soon she wasn’t giving me dirty looks
anymore. I could tell that I was growing on her and she liked me more
and more. It would only be time before we would hook up.

That weekend we began playing “ night games”, or games
played at night such as hide and seek. A round of one of the games
ended so we all came together to restart the match and appoint who
was it next. One of the neighborhood boys named Ian, found a TV lying
next to the garbage. Boys being boys, dragged the television across
the road into another persons yard. After that we knocked on the door
and ran. We also knocked on the garage door in which there was an
annoying dog that kept barking. We all ran and hid, and watched for
the person to come out and see what was going on. I laughed hysterically
because the fat man that came out of the house was very confused.
After the fat, middle-aged man walked back inside we decided that
we all needed to get home. Just because we dragged a TV across the
street didn’t mean that we were bad kids. As we walked some
of the kids home to keep them company, we spread up into several groups
up and down the street. I was at the end of the trail of groups talking
to a friend of mine about how funny we were because of the stunt that
we had just pulled. We heard a car pull up behind us, we did not pay
any attention to who it was. I glanced back to see who was stepping
out of the stopped car. I said silently, “ Oooooooohh shit it
            is the cops”!
The cop strutted up to us. He asked us if we knew
anything about a television being put into a yard and we looked
at each other and said no, no idea. We have been just walking around.
The cop said, “Well if the officer at the scene of the crime
gives me a description of you I will have to take you two to juvy.
As soon as he said this we were both like, “yes
it was us and our friends”. I definitely was not going to
go to juvy for my friends. The middle aged man, that we had tossed
the TV in his yard, told the cop there was more than one boy so
I couldn’t of taken all of the blame. I didn’t like
my friends that much. So he frisked us both looking for weapons,
because boy did we look like criminals with our preppy clothes on.
He placed us in the back of his squad car. I informed the officer
in which each of the kids lived who helped with the television or
where associated with it. As we made a round around the neighborhood,
Aaron, a boy who also was in the car, and I started talking about
how much our parents were going to kill us. Luckily, I remembered
that my parents were not home because they were out of town. So
I thought I was off the hook. But a few days later when my parents
arrived home Aaron’s parents mentioned the cop issue thinking
that I had told them. Who would tell their parents they had got
caught by the cops, certainly not me. My parents were very humorous
so they let it slide and made a joke out of it because none of the
              charges were enforced.
Sunday came around and my family had to go to church.
I dreaded Sunday’s, not only because I had to go to church
but also on Sunday’s it is the Mormon belief that Sunday is
the day of rest. Ms. Corwin called me up and asked me if I wanted
to baby sit for her on Monday night. I chose to baby sit for because
her children were funny and cute. Ms. Corwin had a 4-year-old girl
that was really smart, so smart that she could of passed my math
the other day. Also she had a 5-month-old boy. He was one of the
cutest baby that you have ever seen. So I woke and headed for school
the next day. During 4th period Ms. Corwin confirmed that I was
baby sitting for her from 4:00 to 10:00. Forth period ended so I
headed off the see Jenae, in fifth. Surprisingly she came up to
me and said hi. I was shocked. I figured that this was a good time
to ask her out. Before I could even get the question off she said
yes. Today was one of the best school days ever. Near the end of
the period she asked me if I wanted to hang out with her considering
that we were going out. I really wanted to hang out with her but
I knew my priorities and told her that I was baby-sitting. She laughed
and said that boys don’t baby sit.
“It is easy cash”, I said.
“All well I will just come over with you. You don’t
have to pay me either,” she said.
“I don’t know Ms. Corwin said that I couldn’t
have any friends over,” I said.
“Well I am not your friend I am your girl friend. I will just
come over when she leaves. Just call me when she leaves, everything
is going to be fine. What are you doing to do when you are there?
I will keep you company,” she muttered.
“Well okay then, but you cant stay long,” I said silently.
“All right, see you later tonight. Don’t forget to call
me when Ms. Corwin leaves,” Jenae said as the bell rang.
I went over to Ms. Corwin’s house around 3:50.
Ms. Corwin and her husband headed off for dinner and a movie. But
before they left they gave me pizza money, a list of emergency numbers,
and the typical baby-sitting orders. I called Jenae at about 4:15
and told her that Ms. Corwin had left. She was over quickly. But
she wasn’t her usual self. She was wearing all black and had
bright red lipstick. I just figured it was an outfit that you wear
every once and a while and forgot about it. All day long, Jenae
was all over me. She kept kissing me, don’t get me wrong,
I loved to be kissed but it was a little soon considering we hadn’t
even been going out for more than a day. As she was smothering me
I heard a loud cry. It was Cara, the four-year-old girl. She must
have fallen and lost her front teeth on the fireplace. There was
blood everywhere. I was totally freaking out. I cleaned up the blood
and then put the kids to bed. I was really tired from running around
with the baby and Cara. So I decided to lie down.
Jenae jumped on top of me and started taking my
pants off. This wasn’t the same Jenae that I knew from school.
At first I decided to let her go along taking off my pants. Then
it all came to me, and I told her to get off me. I told her that
she should go. She gathered her things and walked out the door.
Ms. Corwin arrived just as she said she would. She was real mad
that Cara got hurt. She asked me how Cara got hurt. I couldn’t
lie to her so I told her about Jenae. She brought me home and I
went to sleep. I woke up the next morning very excited because I
had a soccer game. I asked Jenae if she wanted to come to my soccer
game. She said that she had better things to do. As I got on the
bus I sat next to Kevin, the team goalie. The bus was very dirty,
so dirty that I could barely see out of the window. Also there was
garbage all over the floor. This resented how I was feeling this
day, lonesome and dirty. We arrived at Briggs Middle School. I was
relieved to get off the bus. For the rest of the day I felt unwanted
and bad. I was one of the best players on the soccer team. Since
I was having a bad day I had a bad game. Since I was the best player
we lost. Because, if I have a bad game the team loses. The next
day Jenae asked me to come over. I said yes. When I got there she
pulled out a bag of pot. She asked me if I wanted any. I said no.
She said that a little bit wouldn’t hurt me and if I didn’t
smoke some of the pot that she would dump me. Since I liked her
a lot, I took some. I really got used to it and began to like it
so I asked her if I could have some. As soon as I got home I went
out back and smoked some of it. I never felt so good in my life.
For the next few days, instead of going to soccer practice I went
over to Jenae house and we smoked some weed. This continued and
Jenae and I got more passionate in our relationship. It seemed that
I was hanging out with Jenae, even during soccer practice.

Traditionally, my family got riled up for Thanksgiving. We would
go to my grandparents house and have a big turkey, mashed potatoes,
and every thing you could dream of. But this year I wasn’t
going to grandmas and grandpas. Jenae asked me to come over so that
we could hang out. I knew mom wouldn’t like it, but screw
it, I was tired of her bossing me around, telling me what to do.
I am an adult so I don’t need to listen to her. Later that
night I told her what I was doing for Thanksgiving. As predicted,
she got mad. She also told me that I needed to clean up my act.
I wasn’t going to listen to this crap. So I went up to my
room and grabbed some things and left. I wasn’t really sure
were I was going, but it was better than this hellhole. First, I
went Jenae house to see what she was up to. But I couldn’t
stay long because that’s the first place that mother would
look. When I got to Jenae’s house I told her that I was running
away. She told me where some of her older friends lived, who had
their own apartment, that I could stay with for a while. I was really
intimidated by the so-called friends of Jenae’s. There were
three of them, all in college. They all want to Lane Community College.
I told them the situation and how Jenae said that I could stay there.
They said I could stay for a few days but that was all. They showed
me the tiny room in which I was supposed to sleep in. The room stunk
with an awful smell. I asked them what the smell was. One of the
guys looked over his shoulder and told me that the smell was meth
and this was a meth house. I looked at him and said, cool? Mom went
looking for me. I decided that since I had run away that I didn’t
have to go to school. On the third day that I was away, I saw on
the news that I was supposedly captured and the cops were looking
for me. The college dudes told me to get some milk at the Safeway
down the street. I really didn’t want to go, but what was
I going to say. If I would of said no they would of tossed me out.
For the last few days I had been their bitch, doing all their little
nic knack chores. It was definitely not very much fun and there
was that rancid smell. So I was somewhat relieved to get out of
the house when I went to get the milk. On the way to Safeway I saw
a cop drive by. The cop stopped, turned around, and then turned
on his lights. I thought that I had done something wrong so I began
to run. I ran back toward the house that I was staying in. The cop
followed me all the way home. I got inside and hid. The guys were
like “ what the hell is going on?” I told them the cops
were after me and they followed me home. They were really mad because
the house smelled like drugs. But it was to late to do anything
about it; the cops were already at the door. They knocked a few
times and then knocked the door in. They held their guns up in the
air and where yelling freeze, freeze. I was so scared that I did
exactly what the cops told me to do, to freeze. I was put into a
cop car and the college guys were put into another, other cops arrived
after the first cop called for back up, because the cops thought
that the house was the house of the person that captured me. But
when we all went down to the Springfield police department I told
the cops that I was never kidnapped. The guys were not charged with
kidnapping but they were charged with possession of meth.
            When I got
home I called Jenae and told her the whole story. She was really
mad because I got her friends sent to jail. She told me to leave
her alone for a while because she needed to think. The next day
mom made me go to school. I really didn’t want to put up a
fight, so I just went to school. Ms. Corwin got on my case for sleeping.
The last thing I wanted was for a teacher to be giving me some lip.
Instead of yelling back I just walked out of her classroom. As I
was walking down the hall I heard a door open and shut. Ms. Corwin
came running down the hall and grabbed my arm and told me to stop.
I told her to get the hell off of me. She told me, “ Ever
since you have been hanging out with that girl, you have been getting
in trouble with the law.” I tried to pull my arm away from
her grip. She slapped me across the face and yelled, “ You
better friggin’ listen to me! You need to get away from that
girl. You used to get good grades in my class, you had good friends,
you were awesome at soccer, and an all around good guy. So if you
want to be a good kid, drop the girl.” For some reason it
was all making sense. I vaguely remember playing soccer and having
fun with my old friends. Hopefully they would forgive me and take
me back as a friend. I thanked Ms. Corwin for putting some sense
into me. Next period I told Jenae that I was breaking up with her.
She was so surprised. When I got home I apologized to my family
and told them that I was out of control. I called up my friends
apologized to them and organized a football game and had a good
time. The next day I brought Ms. Corwin flowers and I told her that
I wouldn’t pull a joke for that day. She said that if I didn’t
she would be disappointed because it just wouldn’t be Keke
Lawther if he didn’t make the whole class laugh.

              THE END
