Summer is coming to an end and that means it’s time to go back to school. Sadly, we’re talking about the return of early mornings, alarm clocks and the return of homework! A new school year is exciting but nerve racking at the same time because you don’t know what it has to offer. So to help fight those first day jitters, Faze is breaing down seven steps you can follow to help you ace your first day!
Step 1: Go to orientation
If you are going to a completely new school this year, it is a good idea to get a tour of the building. A lot of schools hold orientation days for students to help familiarize them with the building and show them the key areas –which is perfect for you! You don’t want to get lost on the first day of school, right? Plus, orientations also give you the chance to meet some of your fellow classmates and members of your school community.
Step 2: Pack your school bag in advance
Put all the school supplies you think you’ll need in your bag the night before school starts, or sooner if you’re on the ball. There are a few basic things you should make sure you pack like a calculator, pencils, paper, binders, erasers, a ruler and a calendar or agenda. It is also important that you do not over pack the backpack—especially if you’re walking to school. Overweight backpacks may cause serious back problems. Packing your bag in advance will save you some time on the first day of school. All you’ll have to do is add some healthy snacks in the morning to munch on during your breaks!
Step 3: Choose your outfit ahead of time
Make sure you plan what you are going to wear the night before your first day of school so that your morning can go as smooth as possible. If your school has a uniform this still applies because hey, even uniforms come with some choices! Don’t forget to iron the clothes as well—pressed clothes look nice and neat! We all know how hard it is to choose the “perfect” outfit, so do it a head of time so you can play around and create the exact look you want. There’s nothing worse than waking up at 7AM looking for a top you want to wear only to find out it is in the laundry!
Step 4: Get a good night’s sleep
Sleep, sleep, sleep! Try to get your full eight hours of sleep in the weeks leading up to the first day back at school—especially the night before school starts. You’ll need to be well rested and energized to deal with the big day that’s ahead of you!
Step 5: Eat a healthy balanced breakfast
Breakfast is considered the most important meal of the day. It sets the foundation for how the rest of your day is going to go. Eating a balanced breakfast can improve brain performance, test scores and overall body function. According to Eat Right Ontario, a balanced breakfast includes foods from at least three of the four food groups in Canada’s Food Guide. Certain foods are considered “brain food” and are proven to help improve brain performance. My personal favourite “brain foods” are avocados, blueberries and oats. It is important that you wake up early for school and make some time to enjoy a good breakfast.
Step 6: Arrive early
This is why you’ll need to be well rested! Plan to arrive at school at least 30 minutes early so you can see where all your classes are. Take a look at where your first class is so you know exactly where you’re going when the warning bell rings or when you see the class start time approaching. Knowing where your classrooms are ahead of time can help avoid embarrassing mistakes like walking into the wrong class!
Step 7: Be confident and throw those nerves away!
It is important that you show up to school with a positive attitude and confidence. Put yourself out there and make new friends. But beware of turning your confidence into cockiness by showing off or acting like you’re better than others. Have confidence in yourself and trust that your first day will go amazing and you know what? It will!
