Don’t mess with the “fat kid.”
Every high school experience is full of ups and downs, but it’s the people you meet that will keep you going. Fat Kid Rules the World, directed by Matthew Lillard (you might recognize his name from the popular Scooby Doo flicks), is the heartfelt story of a boy’s struggle with himself, an unlikely friendship and a new-found passion for music that helps him through it all.
The film follows Troy Billings (played by the talented Jacob Wysocki), a stereotypical “fat kid,” on his journey to find self-confidence. He’s had his share of depressing moments, but after meeting Marcus Macrae (Matt O’Leary), the high school delinquent, Troy sees the world through a new lens and tries things he never would have (unless it was a part of a computer game). The two of them form a punk-rock band called The Tectonics, despite Troy’s lack of musical experience.
Although Marcus brings excitement into Troy’s life, he isn’t exactly the best influence. Marcus is homeless, involved with drugs and steals, but despite this negative circle, Troy and his family try to steer him in the right direction. And taking a look into family relationships, Troy develops a stronger bond with his father and younger brother.
Overall this is a must-see because it’s not your typical teenage comedy; it’s got amazing acting, relatable characters and storyline that keeps you drawn in.
Here’s the run down:
Drama: This film is definitely a roller coaster ride—complete with nerves and even an upset stomach. You really feel like you’re right there by Troy’s side, going through everything with him.
Humour: On top of the drama, this quirky film is full of jokes all along the way. You’ll definitely get a good laugh out of this one!
Friendship: True friendship can be found in many different forms, and for Troy, this came in the form of a homeless guitar player. Despite their moments of anger humility, and frustration, their bond is undeniable.
