Liam Aiken: No Unfortunate Events Here

Liam Aiken has starred with some great names in Hollywood, including Julia Roberts and Susan Sarandon in Stepmom and Tom Hanks in Road to Perdition. We interviewed Liam just after he played the orphan, Klaus Baudelaire in Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events.

How was it working with Meryl Streep and Jim Carrey in Lemony Snicket’s A Series Of Unfortunate Events?

Liam: “It was interesting, and really fun. The other actors were really great and supportive. They allowed you to give your own interpretations of the scene and were generous with their time and efforts.”

How was it working with Jim Carrey? Was it hard to keep a straight face? It’s said that he’s notorious for improvisation.

Liam: “(Laughs) Yeah, Jim was really fun to work with. He improvises a lot. But it wasn’t hard to keep the scene in the direction that it was supposed to go. He would start out where the director wanted and end where the director wanted. Everything else was all his. You’d kinda get lost in the middle and then you’d be like, Oh Ok!”

What was it like to work with the special effects for the film?

Liam: “You’d be surprised how few special effects were actually in it. They had several complete 360-degree sets that were fully functional. Like Aunt Josephine’s house was a complete set, and when it was supposed to fall apart, the whole thing jerked around because they had it on hydraulics.”
