Your Best Back To School Accessory: Confidence

Summer and humidity may still be in the air but the new school year is just around the bend! Going back to school can be a bundle of excitement and nerves, so to help ease our readers into the new school year we reached out to several students and asked them how they build their confidence before going back to school.

When it comes to going back to school, despite that fact that I’m generally older than my peers, I remember that they’re all working toward the same goal as I am. We’re all there to achieve something and be the best that we can be. – Ashley M, 25

There are a few things that make me feel a little more confident before heading back to school: I write a journal about how I’m currently feeling, I videotape myself giving a motivational speech then replay it for myself, and I read inspirational poems. I suggest reading “If” by Rudyard Kipling. – Caleb C, 21

Being around people who believe in me helps to build my confidence. Surround yourself with friends and family who love you and have confidence in your abilities because no one sees all the good in you like they do. – Madison S, 21

Even though confidence may not be an easy thing to have right off the bat, pursuing your passion is an amazing way for confidence to build. There are so many opportunities as a student to be able to thrive and to be that best version of yourself at school – all you have to do is reach out! There are so many clubs and organizations that you can get involved with so that you are able to surround yourself with like-minded people. For example, I have a passion for theatre so I decided to join my campus’ theatre group and it has taught me a lot about hard work through preparation, work-life balance, and how to improvise in complex situations. With those skills I am able to work through situations such as assignment deadlines for classes more confidently. –  Bryan C, 21

I just try and have faith that I’m doing what I’m meant to be doing, and that it doesn’t matter what other people think or say. –  Vaani N, 19

I build confidence by making sure that I’m prepared ahead of time by doing my research and getting all my supplies in advance. (I also love shopping!) – Nikita K, 21

I feel confident when I have everything under control (or at least when I try to have everything together). To do that, I remind myself that I can accomplish these goals, and that I have done it before so there’s no reason why I can’t do it again. It’s all about reminding myself of my strengths and the things that make me unique/special. – Violette K, 19

I feel confident when someone praises me or when I get credit for something I did, like getting great grades on a test that I studied for. I make sure to recognize my accomplishments by complimenting myself. – Henrique G, 16

My favourite way of getting a confidence boost is by getting ready! The feeling of freshness after a shower and then dressing up in something more than casual can never do any harm! – Muhammad S, 20

To help build my confidence it’s really important for me to have goals – both academic and personal goals. I look at what I have already achieved and think about what is important to me and where I want to go. I start by setting small goals, achieving them, thinking positively and finally enjoying success. Never forget: Nothing is impossible! – Patrick B, 22
